High in the Pistoia Apennines, a former rural building and a woodland trail have been turned into one of Tuscany’s most unusual contemporary-art destinations. OCA — Oasy Contemporary Art and Architecture — sits at about 900 metres above sea level inside the Oasi Dynamo nature reserve. It is neither a conventional museum nor a sculpture park that you simply wander into: the experience begins with a walk through the landscape, continues in a converted barn used as a gallery, and, with advance booking, opens onto a guided circuit of site-specific works in the forest.
1. Why OCA deserves a full day
OCA is designed around the relationship between art, architecture and the living environment. The setting is not decorative scenery; it is part of the work. Woodland, changing light, weather and the physical act of walking all shape the visit. That makes OCA especially rewarding for travellers spending at least two days in Pistoia: after a day among Romanesque churches, civic museums and compact medieval streets, the reserve offers a complete change of scale and pace.
The project occupies part of Oasi Dynamo, a WWF-affiliated nature reserve in the mountains north of Pistoia. Its programme brings together artists, architects, poets and researchers rather than separating disciplines into different rooms. The result feels closer to an expedition through ideas than to a checklist of objects.
2. The 2026 exhibition: Arne Quinze in the Apennines
For the 2026 season, Belgian artist Arne Quinze is the principal guest. His solo exhibition I’m a Gardener, presented in OCA’s indoor gallery, uses paintings and works on canvas to examine the relationship between humanity, biodiversity and the forces of growth and transformation. OCA describes it as Quinze’s first major exhibition in Italy.
The season also adds Ceramorphia to the outdoor route. This new work extends Quinze’s interest in organic forms into the landscape itself, so visitors can encounter his ideas both inside the exhibition space and along the nature trail. The pairing is one of the best reasons to visit in 2026: the indoor show and the forest installation reveal two distinct sides of the same artistic research.
3. What you will find on the forest route
The permanent circuit is a collaborative conversation between contemporary art and architecture. Works are integrated into the woods by figures including Alejandro Aravena, Kengo Kuma, Davide Quayola, Pascale Marthine Tayou and Matteo Thun. A project by poet Mariangela Gualtieri and architect Michele De Lucchi adds another layer, showing how language, structure and place can meet outside a traditional gallery.
Do not expect a paved urban sculpture garden. The route is an outdoor experience inside a nature reserve, and entry is permitted only as part of an organised guided visit. That structure protects the environment and helps visitors read works that might otherwise be easy to overlook. The guide also provides a useful thread between architecture, ecology and the history of the site.
4. How the visit actually works
Visitors leave their car at the official parking area on SP 633, no. 15, Località Piteglio, 51028 San Marcello Piteglio. From there, OCA is reached on foot in roughly 30 minutes. The ticket office is not beside the road: it is located at the museum space after the approach walk, so arrive well before any reserved tour.
The converted barn and the temporary exhibition can be visited independently and, according to OCA’s current information, free of charge and without a reservation during opening hours. The woodland art circuit is different: it requires a paid ticket, a guided tour and a reservation made at least 48 hours in advance. OCA recommends allowing at least two hours for the overall experience, but a relaxed visit with the approach walk, exhibition, guided route and a break is better treated as a half-day or full-day outing.
The official website currently contains inconsistent references to the afternoon guided-tour time, listing both 15:00 and 17:00 in different parts of its FAQ. Treat the time confirmed in your booking as definitive. Reservations can be arranged through segreteriaoca@oasidynamo.org or by calling +39 0573 1716197.
5. Opening dates and the best time to go
The verified 2026 season runs from 25 April to 1 November. OCA is open Thursday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:00. Because the experience is partly outdoors and the site is at mountain altitude, conditions can feel very different from central Pistoia. A clear late-spring day gives fresh woodland colour, while early autumn can add mist, changing leaves and quieter paths.
Check the official website shortly before travelling, especially after heavy rain or during unsettled weather. Online tickets are non-refundable, although OCA says visitors may contact the team by email to request a new date for a guided tour. If the forest route is essential to your plans, secure the reservation before arranging the rest of the day.
6. What to wear and bring
Wear closed walking shoes with a good grip and clothing suitable for a woodland hike. A light waterproof layer is sensible even when Pistoia is warm, and an extra layer can be useful at 900 metres. Bring water, sun protection and any medication you normally carry on a walk. Keep your hands free with a small backpack rather than a large shoulder bag.
OCA asks visitors to remain on the marked route, follow the environmental guide, avoid touching the works and take all litter away or use the designated containers. Dogs must remain on a lead. Smoking and fires are prohibited inside the reserve. The official visitor guidance also highlights natural hazards such as adverse weather, falling branches, free-roaming animals and the absence of artificial lighting, good reasons not to rush the final walk back to the parking area.
7. Families and accessibility
For families with children who are comfortable walking, OCA can turn contemporary art into a shared discovery rather than a quiet-room museum visit. Prepare younger visitors for the 30-minute approach and the need to stay with the guide. Snacks, water, suitable shoes and a weather layer will make the day easier, and adults should judge whether each child is ready for a guided woodland route of at least two hours overall.
The forest art path is not suitable for visitors with reduced mobility. OCA states that the indoor exhibition and Casa Luigi can still be reached using an internal shuttle, but this service must be requested by email in advance and confirmed by staff. Contact the venue before purchasing tickets to discuss individual needs; the reserve setting means that precise planning matters more here than at a city museum.
8. Lunch and pacing the day
Casa Luigi is located near the exhibition area and offers a practical place to pause for lunch or a snack. OCA recommends booking the restaurant, particularly on busy weekends. If you prefer to eat elsewhere, plan around the approach walk and your confirmed tour time rather than assuming you can leave the reserve and return quickly.
A comfortable rhythm is to reach the parking area early, walk to the gallery without hurrying, see I’m a Gardener, join the reserved forest route and then stop for lunch. Leave enough daylight for the return walk. This is a destination where a tightly packed timetable works against the character of the place.
9. A two-day contemporary-art itinerary
Day one: Pistoia in the city. Begin with the Museo del Novecento e del Contemporaneo at Palazzo Fabroni, then explore the city centre for modern interventions and historic buildings reused for culture. The compact scale of central Pistoia makes it easy to combine art with the cathedral square, local food and an evening walk.
Day two: art in the mountains. Reserve OCA’s woodland route in advance and devote the day to San Marcello Piteglio. The contrast is the point: on the first day, art is framed by streets, façades and museum rooms; on the second, it is encountered through distance, weather, trees and movement. Travellers without a car should investigate transport and transfer options before booking, as the official visitor parking area is the practical starting point for the approach.
